Respiratory physiotherapy - what is it ?

This January levels of flu, colds and coughs continue to be high in the local community, and a lot of our recent work amongst the elderly population is based on supporting clients in our local nursing homes.

One of the most common techniques we use when supporting older adults is respiratory physiotherapy. It’s a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on helping people breathe more easily, clear their lungs, and stay active despite respiratory conditions.

Respiratory symptoms

Many people are referred to respiratory physio because of symptoms like shortness of breath, persistent coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, or fatigue following simple activities. These symptoms can be linked to many conditions including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, long COVID, cystic fibrosis, or recovery after chest surgery or long hospital stays.

Treatment

Respiratory physiotherapy isn’t just about “breathing exercises,” though those are important.

Treatment often includes airway clearance techniques to help remove mucus, breathing retraining to reduce breathlessness, posture and mobility work to improve lung expansion, and tailored exercise programs to build stamina and confidence. Education is a huge part too—learning how to pace yourself, use inhalers effectively, and manage flare-ups can be life-changing.

We want to help you do everyday things with less effort and with comfort. Whether it’s walking up stairs, improving your sleep, or simply taking a deep breath without coughing, respiratory physiotherapy supports your lungs so you can get back to enjoying living !

Please seek professional medical advice if you are worried about any symptoms you are experiencing.
